Physician-Assistants

Physician Assistants

Physician Assistants (PA) are highly skilled health care professionals who provide a broad range of medical services. They are nationally represented by the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants and must be certified and registered with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. The PA scope of practice is determined on an individual basis and in agreement among the supervising physician and the facility where the PA works. They work under the supervision of a physician, complementing existing health services.

Within women's health, the PAs support antenatal and postpartum care in both acute and community health settings. They conduct patient interviews, histories and physical examinations. They can diagnose, treat illnesses and perform selected procedures in consultation with their supervising physician. At Mosaic PCN the PAs provide comprehensive treatment, support, care coordination, and discharge teaching to all low-risk maternity patients and babies. We are expanding their scope to include the support of physicians on labor and delivery in triage. The absence of family medicine residents on Thursday's provides an opportunity for the PAs to obtain valuable triage experience.

In triage, they can perform assessments and address patient concerns in collaboration with the physicians. All triage patients will be assessed by physicians prior to discharge from triage.

Outside of the hospital, PAs support prenatal care, complete frenotomies and offer breastfeeding support. The PAs also provide unique care at the Mosaic Refugee Health Clinic and provide extensive patient education during clinic visits.
